Guitar Building 101 classes by AM Guitar Repair are an excellent way to begin learning the art of guitar building. This is a basic class where you build a guitar with pre-cut, pre-finished parts. You can choose from a variety of colors and other options. AVAILABLE MODELS: For this class you can choose a Tele style guitar, Strat Style, Precision Bass or Jazz Bass. (Note: Add $30 for Strat or Jazz Bass Models) About the Class The class will be a combination of hands-on and lecture. You will not receive an "assembly manual". We will discuss each step of the assembly process and the theory involved. The goal is to give you skills that you can use on your next project. |

About the Instructor The class will be led by Alan Morrison - owner of AM Guitar Repair in Davenport, IA. Alan has a degree in electronics, and started working with guitars as a teenager (many years ago). In the '80's he was a full time technician at a music store. He now owns his own full time guitar and amplifier repair business. Alan also has teaching skills. He is a guitar instructor and in his previous career at times worked as a trainer, conducting various seminars. About You "Can I do this?" you may ask yourself. Of course, you can. You must be at least 18 years of age. We will allow people ages 14 and up to join the class if accompanied by a responsible adult. You should have some basic skills with hand tools like screwdrivers and files. We will also be using power drills and soldering irons. If you don't know how to solder, don't worry...it's part of the class. You should have basic knowledge of safety when using these tools. You must also be thrilled about the thought of building your own guitar and play well with others. |

About the Guitar This is not a cheap "kit" guitar. The bodies and necks are made from the finest American Ash and Canadian Maple. Other parts and hardware have been hand selected by the instructor. "As owner of a guitar repair business, I have access to lots of parts. I get to see what works well and what does not. I've also seen people spend a small fortune paying for parts that don't always go together." The hardware and electronics provided include brands like Mighty Mite, Wilkinson, Allparts, Seymour Duncan, CTS, CRL, and Switchcraft. How can we build such a nice guitar for so little money? A lot of what you pay for when buying a guitar is labor. You are providing the labor. Also in order to keep prices down, all students pay in advance for the class. Once registration is complete, we order the parts for the class. By keeping a low overhead and ordering in quantity, we save on shipping and overall parts cost. Please note that all the parts for your guitar are provided through the class. No parts are to be brought in that were not purchased through the class. In order for the class to run smoothly, there needs to be consistency. It would not be fair to other students if we have to wait 3 hours for you to install the latest greatest "flux capacitor" you bought on e-Bay. Once you have completed the guitar and left the class, feel free to continue customizing it.
